The Vitalware Birth Registrations Online (BRO) service has won the 2016 Institute of Public Administration New Zealand (IPANZ) award for Excellence in Digital Government.

The Vitalware BRO service was implemented for the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) in March 2015 with the aim of replacing a time-consuming and paper-based process with an electronic system available 24/7. As a result, 85% of all births in New Zealand are now registered online. BRO has proven to be very popular with parents, who are now able to register their new-born baby in days, rather than weeks. Using the online service, parents can also apply for the baby’s birth certificate and IRD number at the same time.

For the DIA, the online service has saved money and increased efficiencies, seeing the production of more timely and accurate records.
